Today, it was confirmed that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) will be officially taking on thousands of cold cases in a bid to aid authorities. The bold move was made after research that was conducted showed that little support was available to those affected by cold cases and missing persons, and therefore the SIU could use its resources to help bring light to the cases.
The exact figure of cases is at an estimate of over 40,000 cases, the biggest ever case load of the bureau’s history, but one that could change the way cold cases are handle in the future.
The aim for taking on such a feat is so that all cases can be re-assessed and investigated with the end goal being new information that could provide vital leads into solving them. The SIU is more than prepared to take the cases on board and pursue what authorities resources could not allow.
It is a known fact that the bureau works closely with authorities when investigating and highlighting these specific types of cases but must also state the fact that any information passed through us will remain in confidence unless specified otherwise by authorities.
In addition to the case loads, a new database will also be introduced on our website, similar to our reports section which will highlight each case. A separate database will also be created for missing persons.
