Police Arrest Man on Suspicion of Murdering Former MP Ann Widdecombe
London — Devon and Cornwall Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of former Conservative minister and outspoken public figure Ann Widdecombe was found with serious injuries at her home in Haytor Vale on Dartmoor, Devon.
The 78-year-old, who served as MP for Maidstone from 1987 to 2010 and later as an MEP, was discovered deceased at around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Officers confirmed they are treating her death as suspicious from the outset.
On Friday afternoon, police arrested a 26-year-old white British man at an address in Newton Abbot, less than 10 miles from Widdecombe’s home. He remains in custody. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated there is currently “no information that this is a politically motivated crime,” and the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
A Formidable Political Career
Widdecombe, a prominent right-wing Conservative known for her strong views on issues including abortion, law and order, and Euroscepticism, held several ministerial roles, including Shadow Home Secretary and Minister for Prisons. She ran for the Conservative leadership in 2001 and later became a vocal supporter of Brexit, serving as an MEP for the Brexit Party before aligning with Reform UK.
Beyond politics, she gained wider public recognition through television appearances on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother, where her no-nonsense style and humor won her fans across the political spectrum. A devout Anglican, she was known for her forthright opinions and resilience in public life.
Tributes and Reactions
Political leaders from across the divide have expressed shock and sadness. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described her as a “formidable politician” with a great sense of humour. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the circumstances “awful” and paid tribute to her dedication to public service. Jacob Rees-Mogg described the news as “deeply, deeply shocking.”
Nigel Farage and others have also offered condolences, highlighting her authenticity and fearlessness.
Investigations are ongoing. Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Widdecombe’s family has requested privacy as they grieve.
