A new unit has been launched after a record breaking record of reported scams and scammers hit after live awareness.
The Special Investigations Unit has now launched its new Anti-Scam Unit after the SIU were overwhelmed with reports. The decision was made to relive pressure on the SIU which also resulted in the team expanding specifically for the new unit.
After a live awareness on scammers, the Bureau received a huge serge in reports to which the decision was made to remove the scam section on the SIU and place it in its own unit to cope with demand. Now, the ASU along with its brand new team are able tom solely focus on scams and scammers and has already made progress with authorities regarding a scammer that was infiltrated after a disturbing video surfaced online.
The new team behind the unit have already stated that they intend to keep causing disruption to online scammers and will continue to monitor their activities.
It is already well known that the Bureau works closely with authorities however after their last intervention, calls are now being made to strengthen cases against scammers after the result that concluded from an investigation by authorities was dropped after a scammer used the mental health card to get himself out of trouble once again.
In a statement given by the interim lead, “We will not quit disrupting these scammers who have left countless victims in their wake, and we will continue to work with authorities until convictions are secured. For far too long, these scammers have gotten away with too much, but since we’ve introduced our awareness lives, we have gained a huge surge in support for the work that we carry out”.
The new team are already working on new ideas to help protect people from these social scammers, and the Bureau already has a scam database which can be checked for the latest scams and scammers. Anyone found to be scamming people online will find themselves on this database and appear on future awareness lives to help prevent further victims of scamming.
