The Special Investigations Unit have confirmed that it will ramp up their efforts to disrupt scammers across social media.
The SIU, which recently tasked a new team to specifically deal with scammers on social media, have confirmed that their approach to disrupting scams will ramp up in an effort to deter scammers. The move comes after a huge increase in scams in recent months, leading to a spike in people being conned out of thousands.
The team behind the operation, dubbed operation disrupt, have said that by constantly disrupting the scammers, should be enough to drive them away, however, the issue that remains is that the scammers are constantly creating new social media accounts to continues their scams, however, a new push is being made towards social media giants to actually enforce a ban on the scammers IP address rather than individual profiles. This would mean that if an IP ban was to come in, it would see a significant drop in scams.
In a statement by board member Agent Carter, “I believe that the more pressure we apply, the more chance we have on persuading this social media giants to do more to protect its users”.
Operation disrupt is already in force and has seen success already in recent months with some scammers saving users thousands in cash. The operation has already been granted a further 24 months to increase the success rate.
