- He continues to claim the killing was a consensual BDSM scene that went wrong and that Elaine took her own life (a story the jury rejected).
- In 2023–2024 he brought a (still ongoing) civil case against the State claiming that retention of his mobile-phone metadata breached EU law – if he ever wins, it could theoretically open a route to appeal the conviction on a technicality, but legal experts consider that extremely unlikely.
The case shocked Ireland because both killer and victim appeared so ordinary on the surface – a successful architect with a perfect family and a quiet childcare worker – while hiding an extraordinarily dark secret relationship.
