The Rendlesham Incident (also called “Britain’s Roswell”) is one of the most well-known and documented UFO cases in the United Kingdom. It occurred over several nights in late December 1980 in Rendlesham Forest, near RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk, England—both bases used by the US Air Force at the time.
Key Events (December 26–28, 1980)
- On the night of December 26, security personnel reported seeing unusual bright lights descending into the forest. Several airmen, including Sgt. Jim Penniston and Airman John Burroughs, investigated and claimed to encounter a triangular or cone-shaped craft on the ground. Penniston reportedly touched it and saw strange symbols.
- The object allegedly took off at high speed, leaving indentations in the ground and radiation readings (according to later reports).
- On December 28, Lt. Col. Charles Halt (deputy base commander) led a team back into the forest with a tape recorder. His famous “Halt Memo” and audio recording describe strange red/orange lights, a beam of light shining down, and objects moving through the trees. Halt later became a prominent public figure in the case.
Official Response and Evidence
- The US and UK military initially downplayed it. A memo from Halt to the UK Ministry of Defence was released years later via Freedom of Information requests.
- Physical evidence claimed: Triangular ground indentations, elevated radiation levels (debated), and tree damage.
- No official explanation was ever fully accepted. Skeptics suggest it could have been the Orford Ness lighthouse, a meteor, or secret military tests (e.g., a crashed drone or plasma phenomena). Believers argue it was extraterrestrial or advanced technology.
Legacy
The incident gained massive attention in the 1980s–1990s through books (e.g., Left at East Gate by Larry Warren and Peter Robbins), documentaries, and Halt’s continued statements. It remains a cornerstone of UFOlogy in the UK, with annual gatherings in Rendlesham Forest. Witnesses have stuck to their stories for decades, though some details have been disputed or evolved over time.

Now, the Bureau intends on following up after a surge in reported sightings within the area and plans to get boots on ground as early as September.
